Historical Museum

The Historical Museum in the former Minorite monastery explains the history of art and culture from the Stone Age to the 19th century.

The collections include topics from prehistory and early history, Roman times, stone sculpture of the Middle Ages, life and trade in medieval Regensburg, sacred art of the 15th/16th century to home decor and arts and crafts of the 16th to 19th century.

Department Prehistory

In two large exhibition halls, the Prehistory Department offers a detailed overview of the regional development from the Palaeolithic Age to the end of the Celtic civilization under the title "The Prehistoric Upper Palatinate" with its rich archaeological finds. Thus, the arc is spanned from the oldest artifact of the Upper Palatinate, the approximately 250,000-year-old hand axe from Pösing, to the most recent finds from the end of the Celtic period in the 1st century BC. Among the vivid graves from different periods is also the "first Regensburg" from the beginning of the Neolithic Age (around 5500 BC).

Department Roman Regensburg

It is particularly popular with visitors to the History Museum, young and old alike: the Roman section with its impressive evidence from the period of the 1st to 5th century AD, when Regensburg, "Castra Regina", was the most important military base on the border of the Roman Empire in what is now Bavaria. The founding inscription, a hoard of coins and numerous other valuable finds, along with vivid models and reconstructions: All this brings Roman Regensburg back to life, its structures, its everyday life, its high level of civilization. Since 2003, the department has been presented in a new, contemporary design.

Department Regensburg in the Middle Ages

Regensburg's Historical Museum is the ideal location for the Medieval Department. The building's main components date back to the former Minorite monastery; in its preserved church and the adjacent cloister, the atmosphere of past centuries can still be clearly felt. In this original environment, the city of the Middle Ages comes alive again. The exhibition covers everything from the political constitution and the diverse economic activities to the everyday life and art of the city and the entire region.
