Thurn and Taxis Castle, its museums, the treasury and the stables

Since 1812, the extensive building complex of the former imperial monastery of St. Emmeram in Regensburg has been the magnificent main residence of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis.

Castle and cloister St. Emmeram

During the guided tour through the "Palace Museum" you will be surrounded by the high aristocratic residential culture between the Baroque period and Historicism, which unfolds all the courtly splendor of past centuries in the splendidly furnished living and representation rooms.

The museum area "Cloister St. Emmeram" takes you into the ascetic medieval monastic world of the occidental Benedictine order; in the neo-Gothic crypt chapel you gain insight into the burial rites of a European noble family.

Princely treasury

In addition to the showrooms, a branch museum of the Bavarian National Museum has been established in the Princely Palace of St. Emmeram since 1998. In the northern stable alley of the old stables, the "Princely Treasury" presents outstanding objects from the art collections of the Princely House of Thurn and Taxis, which were acquired by the Free State of Bavaria in 1993. Exquisite furniture, the finest porcelain, exclusive gold and silver work, a unique collection of valuable snuff boxes and numerous other valuables bear witness to the splendor of one of the leading families of the European high nobility.

Stables

The stables were one of the most important representative areas of a castle. In the years 1829-1832, the master builder Jean-Baptiste Métivier built the royal palace's stables. It consists of the stable wings for the horses and the 600 square meter riding hall with figurative furnishings by the sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler. The Marstall Museum of European rank has an extensive collection of carriages, sleighs, sedan chairs and carrying chairs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Gala crockery, riding accessories as well as court liveries and musical instruments of the court marshal's office illustrate the lavish court life of the Thurn and Taxis.
