Regensburg - "old and new at the same time" - Between the Old Town and the Marina Quarter

Regensburg in the 21st century: That is much more than just the old town. To the east of it, for example, lies the former abattoir district, which has mutated into the "Marina Quartier" - modern structural change in exemplary form. And the path from the "Marina Quartier" along the Danube to the city center tells the story of the last two hundred years of urban development. Here you pass from the old slaughterhouse, which became a conference center, to landing stages where Danube steamboats were replaced by modern cruise ships, and a former parking lot where a highly attractive museum has been built, to one of Regensburg's landmarks, the rebuilt Stone Bridge.

From Slaughterhouse to Marina Quarter - A Former Industrial Area in Transition

The construction of the municipal slaughterhouse on the eastern outskirts of Regensburg in 1888 marked the beginning of industrialization in the so-called Gründerzeit. The Luitpoldhafen and sugar factory facilities followed a short time later. Today, these uses have largely outlived their usefulness; accordingly, the buildings and their associated land parcels stood empty for years. Recently, the city of Regensbrug has been working with investors to develop new structures appropriate for the 21st century. Existing buildings, some of which are listed, are being converted and supplemented by new ones; a residential and service district is being created close to the city center. The old Schlafthofviertel is becoming a modern marina district - a prime example of the structural change taking place in many cities. An important part of this is played by Regensburg Tourismus GmbH, which operates an event center for conferences, congresses, seminars, concerts and celebrations in the middle of the Marina Quartier, thus giving the new quarter a heart that beats.

A city through the ages - A historic city becomes modern

Regensburg's old town - apart from the fact that it captivates visitors with its special flair - provides them with a perfectly suited textbook and sample book of the entire history of European art and architecture. In a very small space, you will find outstanding, high-quality and largely originally preserved examples of all the important styles: from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque to Classicism and Historicism. Individual characteristic building types can also be studied; they are embodied by churches, public buildings and private houses. The construction methods and techniques of different periods can be studied in direct comparison - but not only that. For architecture is always also an interpretation and explanation of the world and bears witness to how people thought and felt. This creates a picture of the zeitgeist of the past. Regensburg is representative of European architectural history - an important argument for the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"Hast Du sowas schon gesehen?" - Kleindenkmäler an Regensburger Häusern
