That there is a torture chamber in Regensburg - correctly expressed: an "Fragstatt" - is common knowledge. That it has something to do with the legal system, and in fact with a legal system that is extremely cruel and inhumane by today's standards, is also well known. But how should one really imagine the judicial system in Regensburg in earlier times, from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century? What punishments were there for what crimes? Is the cliché of the bloodthirsty judiciary true at all? Guilt and atonement, torture and punishment, execution or acquittal: the guided tour traces all this in vivid pictures from the past.
