The fascination of the universe - astronomy past and present at document Kepler and the Regensburg Observatory

Ever since humans have existed, they have been fascinated by what goes on in the sky day and night. What is actually going on? Is there a plan for it all? And does it all have something to do with us? The answers to these questions have varied greatly over time; it took a long time to distinguish between fiction and truth. A long way to exploring the universe - in Regensburg you can follow it easily and comfortably at a short distance. First, we visit the document Kepler, which has been reopened after extensive renovation; it is all about the scientist and scholar who, together with others, founded modern astronomy 400 years ago. And then we will visit the Regensburg Observatory, where experts will tell us about the current state of knowledge.

Urban climate - an interactive knowledge tour

"The climate" - we hear and read about it every day. Our thoughts quickly turn to heat, water and weather in general. These are of course important topics for a city, its inhabitants and its visitors. But isn't "climate" more complex than that? It is also about life in a city, the public space, the social climate. The interactive knowledge tour takes us to places in Regensburg's old town, some of which we know very well, and to places that we often simply walk past. We look at their history and explore together with an expert what we learn here about different facets of "climate" and how the city and people (can) deal with it.
Especially in an urban space like Regensburg, where so much of the original building fabric has been preserved, it is worth taking a look to see whether we can learn something today from the historical buildings and decisions made back then.
Participants in the guided tour are allowed to join in and tinker - it's not just about listening.

In Regensburg, the university, founded in 1967, is a very new institution. Nevertheless, as a location of science, with research and teaching alike, the city has a long and rich tradition. Whether in medieval monasteries or in learned associations of the Age of Enlightenment, whether in the environment of the Jewish Talmud school or at the court of the princes of Thurn and Taxis: science in all possible branches has always been at home here.

A walk through the musical history of Regensburg

Today Regensburg has a lively and diverse musical life, but not only today, as the city can look back on a long and important musical tradition. One of the earliest datable examples of musical notation was written in Regensburg around 830. The monastery of St. Emmeram was a leading center for the cultivation of Gregorian chant. Music, of course, contributed decisively to the splendor of the imperial days, and Regensburg ranks with Salzburg, Vienna, and Innsbruck among those cities north of the Alps where operas were first performed. The court orchestra of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis was one of the leading ensembles in Europe. Commissioned by Bishop Johann Michael Sailer, Carl Proske initiated the renewal of Catholic church music with his research in the archives of the Sistine Chapel in Rome; in the 19th century Regensburg was, according to Franz Liszt, "the church music capital of the Catholic world".

"Regensburg is beautifully situated..." - A literary walk

"Regensburg is beautifully situated. This area had to attract a city." Just as the city captivated Goethe, a traveler to Italy, in 1786, it has also fascinated many other literary figures throughout history. Be it because they visited here, be it because they were born, grew up or lived here. Throughout the centuries, poets have recorded the changes as well as the timeless features of one of the oldest cities in Germany and its inhabitants in their works. On our walk we will track down traces of literary history(s) and learn how the Old Town Hall came to be in the "Magic Mountain", what one of the oldest city sagas in Germany is about, how the snuff factory came to be in the work of a contemporary author, what Karl May has to do with a local publishing house and much more.
