Thurn und Taxis Palace
In the south of Regensburg's old town lies St. Emmeram's Palace, residence of Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis. With well over 500 rooms, it is the largest privately inhabited castle. The magnificent complex emerged from the extensive building complex of one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in Germany, the Imperial Abbey of St. Emmeram. The oldest components date back to the 12th century. In the course of the nationalization of the Thurn und Taxis postal service, the princely house received the monastery complex as part of the compensation of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The following 100-year rebuilding phase created the current ancestral residence of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis.
Prince Albert II, the 12th Prince of Thurn and Taxis, now lives here.
The core of the castle complex, the abbey wing, has its origins in the time of the founding of the monastery, the oldest preserved part of the building dates back to the early 12th century. The first Benedictine monks settled here at the grave of St. Emmeram around the year 800 and established a monastic tradition of over 1000 years. The Papal Basilica of St. Emmeram is one of the oldest and most important baroque churches in Bavaria, and the former monastery of St. Emmeram is one of the most important abbeys in the German-speaking world. Our visitors can see the medieval cloister of the monastery, the princely crypt chapel, the state rooms of the princely family, the former stables with the carriage collection and the princely treasury.
From Fürst-Anselm-Allee you have a beautiful view of the imposing south wing, completed in 1883, the last palace building in Bavaria, and the palace grounds set in an English landscape park designed by Carl von Effner.
